CHOOSING A WAX SYSTEM
The DOMINATOR line contains waxes that fully cover the needs of anyone holding a wax iron. But the products that will cover your specific needs have to be chosen from the line carefully and with an eye on flexibility, effectiveness and economy. Regardless of your level, your box should contain three types of products:

Base prep waxes for base conditioning
The ReNew Zoom waxes must be part of every kit. They are available in graphite and non-graphite versions. The graphite version is much more effective; it tends to stain the base, but this is strictly a cosmetic problem. We recommend that you use the graphite version for black bases or if you have a lighter color base and are willing to ignore the staining.

Hot waxes
A good evaluation of your situation is needed before choosing the right hot wax system.

If you have reliable advance information about the snow temperature and moisture content the 4X4 wax system can offer you top performance. The system contains a total of 22 waxes and obtaining all of them can be expensive and is justified only for the top athletes. There are ways to reduce the cost with small losses in performance by using only the antistatic and hydrocarbon waxes (see package 3, the Hard Core, in our online store) but the 4X4 is generally a system for expert waxers looking for a few extra hundredths of a second.

A competition package that has been very successful at all levels and is rapidly gaining popularity includes the two RaceZoom thermoactive waxes, the two newly developed Bullet extreme cold waxes and Butter. With only five waxes, the system is quite economical and user friendly. There are only three broad snow temperature zones: The Bullet waxes are used alone at snow temperatures of -15C(5F) and lower, or mixed one to one with RaceZoom at snow temperatures of -10C to -15C (14F to 5F). The RaceZooms are used alone at snow temperatures above -10C (14F) and Butter gets rubbed over the scraped and brushed RaceZooms if the snow is very wet. See our waxing chart for more detail. For budget waxing and training Zoom and Graphite Zoom can be used instead of the two RaceZoom formulas.

In summary, depending upon the user's specific needs, budget, and knowledge of snow conditions, great performance over a broad temperature spectrum can be obtained by using either the 4 x 4 system, or the Butter/Zoom/Bullet system. For more technical information on how the two systems differ see the Wax Theory section.

Overlays
The most useful and cost effective overlay is Race Rocket which works quite well on everything except for very wet snow. It must be included in every kit because it also helps with rapidly changing weather conditions. (See Competition day strategy for details.)

At the top level Q6, 65, R6 are part of the arsenal. See the Victory Overlays section for waxing charts.

Butter, Race Rocket and 65 are a popular mid-cost trio. Butter and 65 are used together for wet snow, 65 is used alone for normal old snow and ice, and 65 with Rocket on top for new snow and colder old snow. This is probably the most flexible and best bang-for-the-buck system; Butter and Race Rocket are affordable and 65 is the most economical all-fluoro overlay with a 20g block treating 50 or 60 pair of skis or snowboards.

R6 is a very popular all-around overlay for juniors.
